What is a sore?

A sore is a painful open skin lesion, wound, or ulcer.

What causes a sore?

Sores are caused by intense pressure on the skin over a long period of time. The pressure affects the blood vessels of the skin and tissues beneath. The tissues then die because they are deprived of the necessary blood circulation that supplies them with oxygen.

What is a bed sore and how is it caused?

Bedsores are open skin sores that are caused by intense pressure on the skin over a long period of time. The pressure affects the blood vessels of the skin and tissues beneath. The tissues then die because they are deprived of the necessary blood circulation that supplies them with oxygen. Bedsores are painful open skin lesions, wounds or ulcers. Bedsores are also called pressure sores or decubitus ulcers

Pressure sores mainly affect chronically ill people that have to stay in bed for a long period of time. A poor blood circulation due to immobility can also promote the development of decubitus ulcers.

The following factors further promote the development of bedsores:

  • Poor nutrition
  • Weight Loss
  • Diabetes
  • Poor Hygiene
  • Dehydration

A decubitus ulcer can develop in as little as 8 hours.

What are the symptoms of a bed sore?

Bedsores mostly occur on bony areas of the body, like the hips, ankles, elbows or heels. The first symptom is usually red skin that soon develops into a sore and then into an ulcer.

What is the best prevention of a bed sore?

For prevention of decubitus ulcers it is recommended to change the position of a bed ridden patient at least every two hours.

Also it needs to be made sure that the patient is hydrated at all times and receives a good and proper nutrition. Hygiene is of course absolutely important.

Furthermore there are various devices available that might be useful for prevention of the development of bed sores. These include foam padding, air mattresses, silicon gel pads, flotation beds or sponge rubber mattresses.

By following these guidelines prevention of almost all pressure sores can be achieved.

What is the best treatment for bedsores?

The first step is of course to keep the sore/wound away from any pressure causing situations.

Decubitus ulcers are usually treated with wound ointments and in case of a bacterial infection with antibiotics.

Active Manuka Honey is a medicinal honey that is collected from the flower of the tea tree bush in New Zealand.
