How does Active Manuka Honey Work?
Active Manuka Honey has been researched by Dr. Molan, senior
lecturer at the Waikato University in New Zealand for over 20
years. The strong antibacterial activity of the honey is
due to a unique
factor which Molan named Unique Manuka Factor (UMF).
This factor is a special non-peroxide antibacterial activity that
can only be found in Manuka Honey. The substance however has so
far not been identified.
Regular Honey
Regular honey has wound healing abilities due to the fact that it
keeps a wound moist nurturing the growing tissue with
important vitamins and amino acids. Honey also contains hydrogen
peroxide that has antibacterial strength. Thereby honey could
theoretically help healing wounds.
The problem that occurs with regular honey is that it looses
most of its hydrogen peroxide, its major antibacterial component,
when it comes in contact with the body.
The loss of this antibacterial property creates the following problem:
Honey has high sugar content. Sugar actually promotes the growth of
bacteria. That means, although the honey nurtures and thereby heals the
wound in a moist environment, the sugar content of honey could
also risk bacterial growth in the wound. The hydrogen peroxide,
honey’s natural antibacterial property would therefore have to be
supported by another antibacterial property in order to make honey safe
as a wound dressing.
Active Manuka Honey
Only Active Manuka Honey
has an additional antibacterial property that can
destroy bacteria that would otherwise grow in a wound. Active Manuka
Honey has the ability to sterilize an infected wound without
the side effects of antibiotics. Active Manuka Honey can even have
enough antibacterial strength to completely destroy antibiotic resistant
bacteria, like MRSA.
