Advantages of Active Manuka Honey as wound care product

Dual Antibacterial Strength – Hydrogen Peroxide and UMF

The hydrogen peroxide in Active Manuka Honey together with its natural acidity provide an antibacterial strength just like many other honey do.

As wound care dressing, regular honey can loose most of its hydrogen peroxide.

The loss of this antibacterial property creates the following problem: Honey has a high sugar content. Sugar actually promotes the growth of bacteria. That means, although the honey would nurture the wound in a moist environment, as it is recommended, the sugar content of honey could also risk bacterial growth in the wound.

Hydrogen peroxide therefore has to be supported by another antibacterial property in order to make honey safe as a wound dressing.

Active Manuka Honey has this additional unique antibacterial activity that no other honey possesses: the Unique Manuka Factor (UMF).

Only Active Manuka Honey retains antibacterial strength, the UMF. Therefore, Active Manuka Honey can be a wound care product that effectively prevents and reduces the inflammation of wounds.

In fact, hydrogen peroxide and the UMF enhance each other's power through a synergetic effect. That makes Active Manuka Honey so powerful.

No known side effects

As opposed to antibiotics, a wound treatment with Active Manuka Honey has absolutely no side effects. It is a 100% natural wound care product.

No expiration date

A wound care product can loose its antibacterial strength. Honey lasts for thousands of years when kept away from sunlight at room temperature.

Fights antibiotic-resistant MRSA

Other than conventional antiseptics Active Manuka Honey creates a moist environment when applied as wound care dressing. Although Active Manuka Honey keeps the wound moist, it keeps bacteria in control and can even destroy them. Therefore Active Manuka Honey can be effectively applied to sterilize wounds. It can be described as “natural antibiotic”, and is even fighting antibiotic resistant MRSA

Malodor prevention

The bacteria in wounds usually use amino acids from the body and the dead cells to produce ammonia, amines and sulphur compounds.  These compounds cause wounds to smell. Active Manuka Honey can prevent odor in wounds by feeding the wound with glucose. The bacteria prefer glucose over amino acids and produce lactic acid. Lactic acid does not cause odor.

Fast wound healing providing amino acids and vitamins

Unlike any other wound care product Active Manuka Honey also nurtures the wound in a moist environment and thereby helps the tissue to grow back. Active Manuka Honey provides the wound with amino acids, vitamins and sugars. The vitamin C in it for example might play a major role in collagen synthesis.

Less Scarring or Skin Grafting

Scabs deprive the new tissue under it from oxygen and important nutrients that is needs to grow back. The formation of a scab promotes scarring, because the new tissue cannot grow back at the same level as the healthy skin around it.

Active Manuka Honey creates a protective barrier over the new growing tissue. With the honey on the wound no scab can form and wounds heal without leaving ugly scars.

Disinfection

Honey consists of 84% fructose and glucose (sugar) and 15-21% water. The sugar molecules and the water molecules interact strongly so that bacteria have not enough water available for growth. In a wound this causes an outflow of lymph that provides nutrients to the re-growing tissue. This is called osmotic effect.

In addition to providing nutrients, this outflow also transports dirt and dead cells out of the wound to the surface where it can then be removed when changing the dressing. The osmotic effect also helps absorbing pus in the wound.

Nearly Painless Changing of Gauze

Due to the osmotic outflow the changing of the dressing can be a lot easier, since the gauze with the fluid solution of honey is not sticking to the wound. Therefore lifting the gauze when changing the honey dressing becomes nearly painless. The new tissue is protected and not torn away with the gauze.

Higher Oxygen Content

The osmotic effect also increases the oxygen content in a wound and therefore speeds up the healing process. Oxygen promotes the blood circulation which in turn is needed for healing.

Easily available and cost effective

Active Manuka Honey is a natural treatment that does not need to be prescribed by a doctor. It is cost effective and easily available.
