How are burns treated?
The major goals of a burn treatment are pain relieving and
healing the burn without infection or major scarring.
The most instinctive wound care treatment and best immediate
treatment of a burn is cooling it by holding the affected area
into cold water. This way some burns, like chemical burns cannot
progress any further.
First degree burns usually only require the application of
moisturizing lotions to the affected area and if necessary pain
relievers.
Second degree burns need to be checked and treated by a doctor
if they exceed an area of more than two fists. The blisters
that usually occur with second degree burns should be left alone if they
look normal. The skin will start healing on its own underneath the
blister. The function of the blister is to protect the new skin from
infections and further damage. The only thing you can do is applying a
light gauze to the blister. Then, once the blister bursts it is
important to gently remove the dead skin, for example by washing
it off.
The new skin that formed under the blister lays open now
and needs to be protected. The best way of treating the wound is
to apply a wound care dressing under sterile gauzes. There are
various wound care dressings available.
Active Manuka Honey as burn care has proven many times how
fast and effective a completely natural wound dressing can
help healing burns, without leaving scarring, just beautiful new skin.
How do you apply Active Manuka Honey as natural burncare?
Depending on the size of the wound, apply 1-2 teaspoons of
Active Manuka Honey to a sterile gauze and place it as first
layer on the burn. Active Manuka Honey is acting as a non-sticky
antibacterial burn care dressing that is not causing pain
when removed from the wound. Usually it is enough if you hold this
first gauze with a skin tape in order to avoid leaking. If you wish you
can also place a second sterile and dry gauze on the wound before fixing
the wound with rolled gauze wrap to keep the layers in place.
When changing the burn care dressing wash the affected area
gently with warm water in order to prevent infections. You should
change the honey wound dressing every 12 hours.
The length of the healing process depends on the size and depth of
the burn, however it usually does not exceed more than three weeks.
Once the skin of the affected area is dry
(not crusty) and the pain decreases you can stop treating the burn. If you feel more comfortable you
can keep applying a dry sterile gauze to the wound for a few more days.
In some
cases the burn can be covered with a light green
slime. This is a normal reaction of the body and there is no need to
worry. However if redness, painful swelling and fever occur you should
immediately see a doctor.
